The Peak

The Peak is the highest mountain in Hong Kong having a height of 552 metres above sea level. It can be visible far away from the sea which made the ships to easily identify the place.For the residents of Hong Kong it is the perfect retreat from Hong Kong’s scorching summer heat.

During British rule, Governor Sir Richard MacDonnell's home for summer (circa 1868) was built in The Peak there to escape from summer heat. Soon other wealthy residents also began to make suites there. Years after Alexander Findlay Smith, the person who has done Scotland's Highland Railway, managed to get approval to operate tram routes in 1881.Today, the Peak attracts some 7 million visitors a year, making top tourist destination in the city. The Peak became well known for its spectacular views of the harbour and the city.

Hong Kong’s Natural wonders can be easily covered by The Tram with an economical price. The commercial operation of the Peak Tram started in 1888 with 600 passengers.
There is a Historical Gallery opened for public where more than two hundred memorabilias are exhibited. After spending many years in collecting memorabilia from inland and overseas The Peak Tram Historical Gallery became operational.Some of the items displayed are more than a 100 years old.The 15 theme sections of the exhibition hall will take you back to Hong Kong in the 19th and 21st century. The 120 years of city’s changes can be seen since its inception in 1888. The Peak Tram Historical Gallery is a way of paying tribute to The Peak Tram, its heritage and the history of Hong Kong.

While travelling on The Peak Tram one will experience a spectacular visual illusion; when running uphill, the high rising building of the right ride of the tram appear to fall toward The Peak. This people often referred to as Peak Tram illusion.
